#SSSVEDA 14: Separating Text in Excel with Flash Fill

New in Excel 2013 and 2016 there is a magical way to peel bits of data apart. In this video, I show Flash Fill as a way to separate last names from first names, and strip out email domains from full email addresses.

#SSSVEDA Day 13: Excel Seating Chart Demo & Download

We have to seat 36 people at 6 tables. BUT! You know reality. Reality says that some people must not sit together and some people must sit together. How can Excel help solve that puzzle?

This video is a demo of the tool I created in Excel. Here, you can read about the technical details and download the Excel file: http://datascopic.net/seating/
Or, just download the file: http://datascopic.net/seating%20spreadsheet

The tool also accounts for other concerns like: a person on the list not being assigned a seat. Check it out!

#SSSVEDA Day 7: Every Team Needs Someone Who Understands Data

Everything is data, and it’s important for teams to have someone–an insider–who at least understands data. They might not be able to “do” data, but at least understand data-related needs and how they connect to business rules and processes.

In this video I describe the reasons why.

#SSSVEDA Day 5: When Data Analysis is Wrong

Doing things the wrong way is different from being just plain wrong. Here, I describe having been wrong in my analysis and someone was issued a check for $5000 more than they were due.

The good news is that the problem was caught, decisions were made, and everyone survived. Being wrong is part of the reality of working with data.

SSSVEDA Day4: Sharing the Excel Knowledge

Today Alex Powers at ItsNotAboutTheCell posted a comment that reminded me that:
1. We all started using Excel all the wrong ways.
2. The Excel community is great about sharing knowledge and helping others not have to work so hard.

Here, I share a story about the olden days and doing things the hard way.
